The proposal «Ágora Verde» by the Zaragoza-based studio Magén Arquitectos has been selected as the winner of the competition for the construction of the Vocational Training building of the digital campus, which will be integrated into the new Aragonese Technology District (DAT) Alierta, located on the Río Ebro university campus in Zaragoza, Spain.
The project was chosen from eleven submissions, with the second place going to «S1nerg1as» by the Barcelona studio Sulkin Marchissio, and the third to «Habitar» by Idom Consulting. The winners will receive a prize of 6,000 euros and will be awarded the contract to develop the basic and execution project.
The jury highlighted the central atrium as the distinguishing feature of Magén Arquitectos’ proposal. Designed as a large communal space for meeting and interaction, it is built with a wooden structure, allowing natural light to enter gradually through a stepped section. The treatment of the entrance, which frames and emphasizes access to the building, was also highly valued.
The proposal demonstrates a clear and efficient organization of the program, articulating a perimeter layout that surrounds a spacious central area conceived as an interior agora. The architects designed this core as a stepped atrium-courtyard that diagonally connects the different building levels and provides direct views of the landscaped roofs.
The building will feature a functional program implementing cutting-edge technology, robotics and additive manufacturing laboratories for 3D printing, an immersive room with virtual and mixed reality, a gaming classroom focused on video game design, hardware and electronics workshops, a compact data center, fourteen classrooms, and twelve individual videoconferencing booths for virtual training. Additionally, it will include three business incubators and a coworking area.
These new facilities will enable the relocation of the current digital Vocational Training center, which is currently housed in the Aragón Pavilion of Expo 92.
